How Cybersecurity Training Can Protect Schools in the UK

Cybersecurity awareness training is a critical component in safeguarding the integrity of educational institutions in the UK.

As the networks of schools, colleges, MATs and universities become more and more complex and interconnected, the likelihood of them being targeted by cybercriminals is increased. And, while human error remains one of the largest vulnerabilities in a school’s online defences, cybersecurity training has never been more important.

The need for robust cybersecurity

Building cyber resilience

The UK education sector has recognised the need for robust cybersecurity standards. The Department for Education has published guidance on cybersecurity standards for schools and colleges, emphasising the operational and financial impacts of cyber incidents. These standards are designed to help educational institutions build their cyber resilience and address core principles of cyber governance, processes, and strategy.

Meanwhile, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) provides practical resources to help schools improve their cybersecurity, including a cybersecurity toolkit for boards and training packages for school staff. These resources are aimed at helping staff and students with the knowledge to recognise and mitigate cyber threats.

What are the consequences of inadequate cybersecurity?

The statistics you need to know

The Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2024 revealed that a significant number of educational institutions have identified breaches or attacks in the past year. For example, 71% of secondary schools and 86% of further education colleges reported such incidents. Higher education institutions are even more likely to be affected, with 97% identifying a breach or attack within the same period.

Specific examples of cyber incidents due to lack of proper training include ransomware attacks, where confidential data from UK schools was leaked online after they refused to pay ransom demands to the threat actor Vice Society. Additionally, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) reported an increase of 55% in cyber incidents in the education and childcare sector in 2023 compared to the previous year.

These incidents highlight the necessity of cybersecurity awareness training. By educating users on the risks and best practices, schools can significantly reduce the likelihood of successful cyber attacks. Training helps create a culture of security within the institution, where every member understands their role in protecting sensitive information.

The importance of cybersecurity training

The need for proactive measures

Cybersecurity awareness training within the UK education sector is critical for the protection of students, staff, and institutional data. It is a proactive measure that can prevent significant losses, both in terms of data and finances, and maintain the trust and safety of the educational environment. Institutions must continue to invest in comprehensive training programs and stay updated with the latest cybersecurity practices to combat the ever-evolving threat
