Upgrading networks for greater energy efficiency
Energy costs in general can swallow a huge amount of a school’s budget, and many legacy network devices are highly inefficient. Newer devices, on the other hand, include features such as Energy-Efficient Ethernet (EEE) and Low Power Idle (LPI) mode that reduce power consumption during periods of low data activity. It’s estimated that, on average, these features provide around 15-20% efficiency savings alone – a welcome benefit for schools navigating mounting ecological concerns and government net-zero targets.
In addition, smart/managed wireless networks allow APs to be scheduled to reduce power or even switch off when schools are closed. Given that most schools' wireless networks are only active for around 8 hours per day, Monday through to Friday, being able to schedule networks shutting down or entering a low-power standby mode can provide efficiency savings well in excess of 50%.
While newer APs are much more powerful, they are also generally designed more efficiently – often using no more or sometimes less power than older versions, despite providing significant performance increases.
