Why future-proofing school networks matters
Technology never sits still. Nowhere is that concept more apparent than in the rate at which digital tools have advanced in education, becoming an integral part of the learning process.
From cloud-based learning platforms to internet-connected devices in every classroom, students now rely heavily on access to technology to further their educational development – and, at the heart of any school’s digital infrastructure: a robust network.
However, without proper planning, networks can quickly become outdated, causing disruptions and hindering learning outcomes.
Future-proofing your school network ensures it remains adaptable, secure and reliable for years to come. Simultaneously meeting today’s needs; while anticipating tomorrow’s demands.
Computeam are experts when it comes to network design and implementation, with over 25 years of experience in the industry, helping schools across the UK stay ahead of the curve in an ever-advancing digital landscape.
Assessing your current network capabilities
Understanding your starting point
The first step on the road to future-proofing is evaluating your current network. Many outdated school networks were built to accommodate the needs of a much simpler digital era. Now, as the reliance on technology in schools increases, they must support a growing number of devices, bandwidth-heavy applications and the migration of educational tools to the cloud.
A comprehensive network audit identifies existing strengths and weaknesses, which might include:
Bandwidth capacity to handle simultaneous users.
Wireless coverage to ensure seamless connectivity across the school.
Security protocols to protect against cyber threats.
Computeam uses advanced wireless surveying tools to analyse such factors. Our expertise ensures that schools have a clear picture of their network's current state, which forms the foundation for future improvements.
Designing a scalable network infrastructure
Building flexibility to accommodate growth
A critical element of a future-proof network is scalability. As technology evolves, schools need networks that can grow with them. This requires investing in infrastructure that can handle an increasing number of devices, higher bandwidth demands, and developing technologies.
A scalable network begins with smart design. Computeam’s predictive modelling ensures that every aspect of the infrastructure is planned with growth in mind. From robust switches to high-performance wireless access points, each component is chosen for its ability to adapt to future needs.
Upgrading networks for greater energy efficiency
Energy costs in general can swallow a huge amount of a school’s budget, and many legacy network devices are highly inefficient. Newer devices, on the other hand, include features such as Energy-Efficient Ethernet (EEE) and Low Power Idle (LPI) mode that reduce power consumption during periods of low data activity. It’s estimated that, on average, these features provide around 15-20% efficiency savings alone – a welcome benefit for schools navigating mounting ecological concerns and government net-zero targets.
In addition, smart/managed wireless networks allow APs to be scheduled to reduce power or even switch off when schools are closed. Given that most schools' wireless networks are only active for around 8 hours per day, Monday through to Friday, being able to schedule networks shutting down or entering a low-power standby mode can provide efficiency savings well in excess of 50%.
While newer APs are much more powerful, they are also generally designed more efficiently – often using no more or sometimes less power than older versions, despite providing significant performance increases.
Prioritising security and data protection
Keeping your network safe
As schools rely more on digital tools, the importance of network security cannot be understated. Cyber security threats, data breaches and ransomware attacks are becoming increasingly common, and educational institutions are often prime targets.
Indeed, the Cyber Security Breaches Survey of 2024 revealed that 71% of secondary schools reported a breach or attack in the past year, compared to 52% of primary schools. Meanwhile, and just as alarming, research from TeacherTapp in July 2024 revealed that 20% of school staff 'did not know' if they had been subject to a cyber attack.
Future-proofing means implementing security measures that protect sensitive information while allowing easy access for authorised users. This includes:
Advanced firewalls to monitor and control network traffic
Regular software updates to protect against vulnerabilities
Multi-factor authentication for added user verification
Computeam integrates these measures into our network solutions, ensuring schools can focus on education without worrying about cyber risks.
Future-proofing cybersecurity policies
Future-proofing is a key component of Computeam’s cybersecurity approach, and much of our work for schools is centred around the process of secure configuration. Indeed, many of the breaches we encounter are due to incorrectly configured legacy systems. For that reason, one of the most critical steps in a cybersecurity strategy is reviewing and improving the configuration of existing systems.
While it’s common for manufacturers to patch and update hardware and software with new features to deal with growing cyber threats, that doesn't always mean those features are automatically enabled.
Often, additional work and configuration are needed to ensure that they are implemented. With limited time, skills and budgets, schools regularly overlook these details and – because they are still receiving updates – assume everything is working as it should.
Supporting the shift to cloud-based learning
Why cloud-ready networks are essential
Schools and MATs are becoming more and more familiar with cloud-based learning platforms, benefiting from the technology’s flexibility and convenience for both students and teachers. Naturally, however, these systems place additional demands on the network, relying on a robust Wi-Fi connection and infrastructure to deliver resources.
To future-proof effectively, schools need networks designed to support the shift. Reliable and fast internet connections, coupled with robust internal infrastructure allow cloud-based tools to perform seamlessly. Computeam’s expertise in designing networks that support cloud migration helps schools make the transition smoothly, further future-proofing the classroom environment.
How Computeam help migrate schools to the cloud

The success of the cloud migration at St Elisabeth's stands as a testament to our commitment to delivering cutting-edge, cost-effective solutions that empower education needs. We are proud to be their managed service provider and continue to support their IT infrastructure ensuring this remains secure and efficient.
Proactive maintenance and ongoing support
Staying ahead of potential issues
Even the best-designed networks require maintenance to perform optimally. By its nature, future-proofing isn’t a one-off operation; rather an ongoing process of monitoring, updating and adapting to new challenges.
Computeam’s managed services provide schools with access to a team of experienced engineers who can address issues before they become problems. By taking a proactive approach, schools can avoid costly disruptions and ensure their networks always operate at peak efficiency.
Regular assessments and upgrades also play a crucial role in keeping networks up-to-date. With technology evolving so rapidly, these periodic reviews are essential for maintaining a future-ready infrastructure.
Aligning your network with educational goals
Technology as a tool for better learning outcomes
A future-proof network is a vital component of the educational experience. When networks are reliable and efficient, they create an environment where technology improves learning outcomes – rather than a barrier to success.
Computeam’s network and Wi-Fi solutions for schools focus on aligning network design with the specific needs of schools and MATs. By understanding each organisation's educational goals, we can create tailored solutions that support both current teaching methods and future innovations.
