Case Study: Varna Community Primary School

Ensuring the smooth transition and intergration of IT systems to a new school

Varna Community Primary School

Another successful school delivery by Manchester City Council and Computeam Ltd.

In May 2012, staff and pupils of Varna Street Primary School moved to a brand new building and became Varna Community Primary school, serving residents of the Openshaw area of Manchester. Manchester City Council's Strategic Construction Framework One team delivered a state of the art 2-form entry primary school, with all the ICT being designed, supplied, installed and supported by Computeam.

"With the assistance of Computeam and their project management team we have been able to seamlessly move and integrate systems from the old site to the new, while identifying any potential problems before the school officially opened. The process has been smooth and Computeam have been an excellent partner for us."

Ian Greenwood, Senior Project Manager, Manchester City Council:

Varna Community Primary provides an inspiring new setting for teaching and learning. Computeam were tasked by Manchester City Council to transfer the schools' legacy ICT estate and combine it with a new high density infrastructure that would meet teaching and learning for the next generation, all within a tight 4 week delivery period.

Once the requirements of the school had been identified, Computeam had no hesitation in installing new curriculum and administration servers from Dell, adding a high speed internet connection with secure filtering solution, and extending the school's Meru wireless network to provide a future-proof infrastructure for teaching.

The 4th Generation Meru wireless network allows the school to seamlessly run their Apple Mac Suite alongside existing Windows Laptops, while allowing teachers and pupils the freedom to use mobile technology anywhere within the school.

"I have been amazed by how smooth the transition has been. We left an old school and now have a modern teaching and learning environment that has been ready since the day that we opened. Any technical problems that have appeared have been dealt with swiftly and the aftercare service has been very good. This has allowed us to concentrate on what we do best – teaching!"

Evonne Williams, ICT coordinator, Varna Community Primary School

Another priority at the school was to refresh their classroom audio-visual solutions. Computeam is an accredited Promethean partner and were able to provide and install brand new ActivBoard 300 Pro series interactive whiteboards with integrated projectors. As ever, the real impact of technology like this depends on the support and training that goes with it, and a key future priority of the school is Promethean training for teaching staff.

Computeam were thrilled to be involved in this exciting project and are looking forward to working with both the school and Manchester City Council for many years to come.
